Volunteers Needed for CanTreatCOVID Study

The Department of Family Medicine at the University of Calgary (along with 30+ partner organizations) is conducting a province-wide study to access the efficacy of high dose antioxidants in reducing the symptoms, duration, and severity of COVID-19.

The Study

The research team is evaluating a combined antioxidant therapy (300ug selenium, 40mg zinc, 45mg lycopene, and 1.5g vitamin C) for COVID-19 patients.

They would like to share this callout with practitioners who may be interested in referring patients to the study. Practitioners could do this by having a poster up in their office or by referring patients to visit their website or call the hotline.

Because patients must have active COVID to enroll in the study, it is likely that this conversation would come up if patients/clients are cancelling due to illness.

Patient Requirements

Patients must have COVID-19 with symptoms starting in the last 5 days to participate. The study is open to adults aged 18-49 years with 1+ chronic medical condition or who are immunosuppressed OR older adults aged 50+ years.

If a provider is unsure, they can refer their patient/client to the study and they would conduct the screening.

Once enrolled in the study, participants are randomized to a study treatment (currently a high dose antioxidant) or usual care. If they are randomized to the treatment arm, the study drug is mailed directly to their home.

Participants are compensated for their time.
